Pelicans are one of my favorite birds. Brown Pelicans are in Texas year around. It is fascinating to watch them fly high over the water looking for fish near the surface. As soon as they spot the fish, they dive bill first into the water. Then the pelican drains the water from its pouch and will toss its head back so it can swallow the fish he caught. Sometimes, you will see a seagull follow close behind and land on the pelicans head hoping to get the fish from it. So far I haven't seen the seagulls have any luck but they keep on trying. :)
You also will see them at boat ramps and fishing piers
waiting for the local fisherman to throw their unwanted fish back into the water.
The White Pelicans are only here during the winter months. Although I like both the brown pelicans and the white pelicans equally .... I get excited when I start seeing the white pelicans arrive as I know they will be gone in a few short months until next winter.
White pelicans don't dive for their food
like brown pelicans do.
They dip their bills below the water to scare the fish
or pound their wings against the water to chase the fish towards them
This little church charm is over 50 years old. It was my grandmothers. It was one of many charms that dangled from the bracelet on her wrist. I always liked looking at the charms but this one was my favorite. If you look below the church steeple you can see a little magnifying glass . When you look through there, you will see a written prayer. The charm is only 3/4 of an inch high. I was always so fascinated as to how the prayer could fit in such a small space. :)
The Muscovy Duck mother is trying to keep an eye on her seven ducklings as they race here and there exploring the territory.
This little one runs ahead as fast as its little feet can carry him. He reminded me of a little child when they are just learning to walk. He would run so fast that he would lose his balance and plop down on his bottom. In a blink of an eye, he was back up running again.
As his momma keeps an eye on him, he is keeping an eye on me. I am kneeling down with my camera trying to get an eye level view and hoping that Momma duck doesn't notice me and come charging at me!
One of my favorite things are butterflies. It doesn't matter what kind of butterfly it is. I love to see them flitting and fluttering through the air and lighting on flowers along the way. This is why I named my blog Precious Butterflies. :)
